A Brush Fire

Last week the weather was good and the kids were out riding their bikes racing ahead of us.

As were walking we saw DD and her friend race towards us all worked up about a truck and couple of guys causing problems just as we noticed a plume of smoke arising from the woods close by our neighborhood. We raced ahead to see what was going on.

The brush around the pond we visit often to see the ducks and their little ones was on fire.

The brush was bone dry and the fire was spreading fast. The folks on the trucks were our neighbors and had driven there to take a closer look.

They informed us that the fire trucks were on the way. This was the first time that I have seen how a firecrew works from very close quarters.

It also gave an appreciation of how difficult a task it is to battle forest fires. It took a couple of hours for the fire to be put out completely.

The kids though transfixed were anxious when the fire got a bit further and the fire fighters ran out of water and had to get to a fire hydrant close by.

We were relieved when it was finally brought under control.

It was scary for a while there because there were homes just a few hundred feet from the fire.

We thanked the volunteer fire fighters and that brings me to the next post - Volunteering.

  3. OMG! Glad everything is cleared up now, duckies are safe and sound, of course humans too. Grass looks so dry there, must be very cold still.

Your blog looks so good! :)

  6. Glad to know everyone is safe. Have a safe and happy weekend Indo, I have always been appreciative of how the people give back to the society by volunteering. I have done a bit myself and I know how much satisfaction it gives.

  12. Thanks everyone. Luckily the fire was contained before it reached the houses.

Sandeepa, no it was a moderately chilly day so the heat did not bother us. But the smoke clung to us and luckily the wind was blowing in the opposite direction away from the houses.

Cilantro, thank you, I did change the layout.

  14. Hi ISG -- we have brush/forest fires in the little woods around here at times too -- it IS scary! I haven't seen the firefighters close up as you did.

Is it really a volunteer fire crew there! That is a selfless job. One summer when I was in the UP of Michigan they had a wildfire that burned acres and acres -- it's all volunteer up there in rural country -- eventually the National Guard came in with a couple of water-dropping copters. Amazing, the power of nature --really makes you stop and think.

I'm glad everyone, people and ducks, stayed safe.

OH almost forgot to say, I love the new look! :)
