Moong dal with mustard greens (Lentils with greens)

mustard greens

Swiss Chard has always been my favorite green in terms of growing and cooking but this time I also sowed seeds for mustard greens and I am glad I did. They are tasty and absolutely perfect with dal. This is MIL's recipe for the dal and greens. I normally don't add tomatoes and she does not add garlic which I do.

Toor dal, masoor dal or moong dal can be used in this recipe. As for the greens, Swiss Chard, mustard greens or amaranth greens work nicely. Spinach works as well.

Moong dal with mustard greens
Ingredients
1. 1 cup of moong dal cooked with 1 tsp turmeric powder 1/2 tsp of sesame oil in 2 cups of water till soft and mushy (masoor or toor dal will work as well)
2. 2 Cups of mustard greens washed and chopped
3. 1/4 cup chopped shallots
4. 5-6 green chilies slit
5. 1 tomato chopped
6. seasonings: mustard seeds and curry leaves
7. salt to taste
8. 1 tsp oil or ghee

Method
1. In a pan heat oil and add the mustard seeds and when they pop add the curry leaves followed by the onions. When onions turn pink and translucent add in the green chilies
2. Add the tomatoes and saute till they are soft
3. Add the mustard greens and saute till they start to wilt
4. Add the cooked dal, give a good mix
5. Add salt to taste and let it come to a boil

Serve with rice, they are an excellent side for chapatis

  4. last winter I sowd some mustards too and they are incredibly easy to grow. cooked sarshon da shag and both liked it. this one looks very comforting. can imagine the slightly pungent taste with the smoothness of the dal. great combo.

  8. I forgot to sow mustard. :( probably when the radishes come out, I'm going to use that space for mustard. The dal looks very tempting.

Indo, Would it be possible to see a picture of your veggie patch? All that you grow and post here are very inspiring!

  15. This was delicious! I made a few changes including using a can of roma tomatoes, swapping peppers for cayenne pepper and a few shots of Frank's Hot Sauce, swapping mustard seeds for a 1/2 teaspoon of masala to the dal, and finishing with a few tablespoons of cilantro and a dash of fresh lemon juice. Thanks for the recipe.
